The Kenya Kwanza administration has been criticized by the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) for implementing stringent tax measures and overlooking the issues raised by various stakeholders.

Addressing a gathering in Limuru on February 2, Chris Kinyanjui, the secretary general of the council, claimed that Ruto showed a lack of regard for the rule of law by not adhering to the principles of good governance.

“Yes, our members voted for you but they did not vote for you to increase taxes,” he stated.

Kinyanjui contended that Ruto’s strategies were ineffective, leading to challenges for Kenyan citizens in meeting their tax obligations and managing their financial responsibilities.

“Our church members are saying although they supported Kenya Kwanza, we did not support Kenya Kwanza to increase taxes,” Kinyanjui commented.

The NCCK expressed concern that Kenyans’ net income has been notably impacted by taxation measures, particularly the housing levy and the social health fund.

“We did not give the Kenya Kwanza mandate, to charge them the housing levy for houses they don’t need,”

“We don’t want to be charged more, for health like NHIF, increasing it and also the other taxes that are being increased is unjustified,” he further clarified.

NCCK additionally called on the government to establish a council focused on social and economic matters to tackle the economic difficulties facing the nation.

The clergy members asserted that it is essential for the council to be obligated to tackle and promote public understanding of additional proposed taxes, particularly those related to the Agriculture sector.

Reports from the previous year indicated that the government intended to implement fines of Kdh500,000 and imprisonment for entrepreneurs involved in the poultry and livestock industries.

The Ministry of Agriculture intended to authorize chicken inspectors to conduct surprise visits to farms and examine vehicles and aircraft transporting poultry.
