On Saturday, Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza addressed allegations against certain affluent individuals accused of unlawfully acquiring land belonging to Mitunguu Airstrip.

The Governor elevated the issue to President William Ruto, who was touring the area and urging the Head of State to step in and reclaim the wrongfully acquired land.

Mwangaza disclosed that around 140 acres of the designated 340-acre area for the airstrip had been taken over by a small group of affluent individuals.

“We have an airstrip here and we are asking the president to open it for us,” she stated.

Leaders in the community urged the National Government to enclose the land to deter further encroachment. Additionally, they appealed to Ruto to persist in the battle against corruption.

They also urged the implementation of severe actions to prevent any corrupt individuals involved in land grabbing from encroaching upon the parcel of land.

Furthermore, authorities also urged the refurbishment of the facility to enhance air travel within the region. The revamping of the airstrip will benefit the local Kenyan population.

Throughout the tour, President Ruto examined and inaugurated numerous ongoing initiatives, such as the Mweru Umoja One Irrigation project, Mitunguu Technical and Training Institute, Mwichiune Economic Stimulus Market, and the Jitume ICT hub, among other endeavors.

“Our investment in technical colleges and ICT hubs guarantees our youth the acquisition of competencies to help them monetize their knowledge and skills,” Ruto remarked.

Moreover, the leader committed to a 50 percent reduction in food imports over the upcoming five years. He underscored the intention to accomplish this goal through the enhancement of Kenya’s agricultural sector and by reducing the current Ksh500 billion budget allocated for food imports.

Ruto was in Meru for a three-day tour, he was joined by his deputy Rigathi Gachagua among other leaders.
