Omtatah Reveals Plan To Impeach Ruto After Seeking Police Help
Senator Okiya Omtatah from Busia has announced his intention to initiate legal proceedings against President William Ruto, citing the President’s repeated criticisms of the Judiciary.
Addressing the press on Friday, the senator clarified that the President had exceeded his authority by interfering in the matters of the Judiciary.
Apart from pursuing legal action in court, the activist pledged to advocate for the impeachment of Ruto if he doesn’t withdraw his statements that are said to have negatively impacted the reputation of the Judiciary.
” I’m trying to get the police to record my statement. The case has been transferred from Nairobi to Kisii and I will be heading there on January 31, 2024, to deal with it,” he detailed.
“To me, it’s a serious allegation because the independence of the Judiciary is not for his benefit but for that of the people. It’s the people who benefit when the judge is not biased.”
“So this is something close to my heart and I would be asking that the President withdraws his statement or I’ll build a file for him to leave office and deal with him,” the senator told KTN News.
Omtatah praised the judges for their rulings on Friday, which included the invalidation of the Housing Levy and the prohibition of the National Police Service (NPS) from dispatching police officers to Haiti.

He observed that the autonomy of the judiciary is crucial for the progress of a nation.
“The Judiciary gave priority to the people of this country. If we allow this law that has been declared unconstitutional to continue, it will create chaos and the public interest will not be served in that route,” he added.
Omtatah is widely known for advocating for the rights of Kenyan citizens in matters related to social issues and government policies.
He was one of the individuals who lodged a legal challenge against the Housing Levy, contending that it lacked justification and violated the constitution.
At present, Article 145 of the Constitution delineates the procedure for impeaching a President, necessitating approval from two-thirds of the National Assembly and a corresponding endorsement from the Senate. It is noteworthy that Ruto currently holds a majority in both legislative bodies.
The Constitution allows for the impeachment of a sitting president in cases of significant violations of the Constitution or the commission of an international crime.
