CS Murkomen Proposes Ksh 700M for New Toll Stations on Major Highways

Kipchumba Murkomen, the Cabinet Secretary for Transport, has suggested implementing additional toll stations along main highways to generate funds for nationwide road construction and maintenance.

On Friday, while unveiling the 2023-2027 Strategic Plan for the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA), Murkomen mentioned that the Athi River-Namanga Road and Galleria-Rongai-Ngong-Karen Shopping Centre were included in the plan.

Additional routes comprised the Mombasa to Malaba route, as well as Corridor C and D routes, namely Museum Hill-Moyale and Sirare-Lodwar, along with Kiambu Road.

The Chief Secretary underscored the government’s dedication to securing alternative funding for enhancing the road infrastructure throughout the nation.

He mentioned that the suggestion would enhance the comprehensive strategy of building more than 2,000 kilometers throughout the nation.

โ€œWe will make sure that, from all those tolled roads, the resources are transferred back to the people of Kenya by giving them quality roads,โ€ Murkomen stated.

He approximated that the installation of the new toll stations on the main roads would involve an average expenditure of Ksh700 million by the government.

He mentioned that the government aims to leverage the Public Private Partnership and utilize resources from Climate Funding to implement the KeNHA strategic plan over the next four years.

The primary responsibility of KeNHA is to enhance, restore, oversee, and uphold all major highways throughout the nation.

Director General Kungโ€™u Ndungโ€™u of the authority supported Murkomen’s suggestion, affirming that the organization had recognized a significant issue regarding the longevity of major roads.

He observed that he would utilize cutting-edge technology within his jurisdiction to tackle the issue and achieve the established objectives.

“The roads to be constructed are comprising 1,183km of new roads construction, 674km will be constructed to enhance capacity and 492km will be rehabilitated,” Ndung’u highlighted.
