Kenyans React After Kagame Snubs Gachagua in Social Media Post
A post on social media by Rwandan President Paul Kagame has generated varied responses online as he seemed to disregard Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Kagame posted a picture on social media summarizing the happenings at the 60th Anniversary of the Zanzibar Revolution Celebrations, which took place in Tanzania last Friday.
Paradoxically, the photograph depicted Kagame seated between Gachagua and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni. Despite Kagame acknowledging the leaders present at the meeting in the caption, Kenya’s deputy leader went unmentioned.
Kagame acknowledged the attendance of Zanzibar’s leader, Hussein Ali Mwinyi, and Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu, relegating all other regional leaders to the general “others” category.
“Today at Amaan Stadium, President Kagame is participating in the 60th Anniversary of the Zanzibar Revolution celebrations, joining H.E. Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, H.E. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of Tanzania and other leaders from the region,” Kagame noted.
“As Africans, this is proof that we are capable of coming together to solve our own problems, harnessing opportunities that come with that,” he added.
The post promptly drew the interest of onlookers who raised concerns about whether this was an oversight and queried why Gachagua had not received acknowledgment.
“You didn’t mention Museveni and the Deputy President of Kenya,” questioned an online user.
“Other leaders” and he is just next to you surely?” Another commented.
Gachagua received an invitation to attend the event on behalf of President William Ruto. The President has been actively involved in official meetings, inaugurating development projects, and interacting with Kenyans in the Rift Valley over the past week.

The Deputy President was joined by Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, along with Members of Parliament Owen Baya (representing Kilifi North), Michael Muchira (from Ol Jororok), Letipila Eli (representing Samburu North), Rachel Nyamai (representing Kitui South), Joseph Cherorot (representing Kipkelion East), Jane Njeri (from Kirinyaga), and Cynthia Muge (representing Nandi).
It is conceivable that Ruto could have conveyed his inability to participate in the Zanzibar event, leading the government to send Gachagua as the nation’s second-in-command in his place.
Gachagua jetted back to Kenya on Friday night.
“This evening, I left Zanzibar City after a successful 60th Anniversary celebration of the Zanzibar Revolution. The celebration also offered us an opportunity to interact and share in matters of common interest with Heads of State and Government and other leaders,” Gachagua noted.
“On behalf of President William Ruto and the People of Kenya, I thank President Samia Suluhu of the United Republic of Tanzania and President Hussein Mwinyi of Zanzibar for hosting us.”
In her social media summary posted at the time of writing this article, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu did not specify the names of any leaders who attended the event.
