Gachagua’s Blazing Critique: Clash with Maina Njenga Erupts Over Nyeri Youth Arrests

On Tuesday, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua reacted to the apprehension of more than 250 young individuals believed to be affiliated with the banned Mungiki group.

While addressing attendees at the funeral of Nyandarua Senator John Methu’s father, Gachagua emphasized the Kenya Kwanza government’s determination to intensify efforts in targeting individuals believed to be associated with the Mungiki group.

The Deputy President addressed the public a day following allegations made by former Mungiki Leader Maina Njenga, accusing both the Deputy President and the Kenya Kwanza government of targeting young people from the area.

Moreover, Gachagua addressed the audience shortly after disorder erupted at the Divisional Police Headquarters caused by the detained youth.

DP Gachagua mentioned that the Sunday arrests stemmed from an investigation spanning two months.

Gachagua noted that President William Rutoโ€™s administration would ensure that the gang never committed atrocities in Mt Kenya and Rift Valley regions.

โ€œAn attempt is being made now to revive that criminal gang. Two months ago they had started illegal revenue collection,โ€ he stated.

Gachagua further mentioned that the banned group participated in attacking and sexually abusing women in the Mt Kenya area.

The Deputy Prime Minister alleged that the group of young men was establishing an alternative method for gathering taxes, with the funds directed into the account of their leader.

Some individuals from the public were being coerced into paying enforced fees imposed on public transport vehicles and stores specifically in the Mount Kenya area.

He earnestly urged young men in the area not to be misled into participating in unlawful behavior.

Furthermore, Gachagua addressed allegations suggesting that the government had targeted the same young people who supported him and President William Ruto to gain power by labeling them as part of the Mungiki group.

โ€œDo not tell us that the young men are from our region, even the women being defiled and matatu owners being extorted are from the community,โ€ he stated.

On whether the crackdown would affect his popularity in the region, he responded, โ€œIf there is any political price that needs to be paid to protect these women and our young girls then I am ready.โ€

Nyeri police had to step in when more than 250 young individuals, who had been apprehended, started singing cultural tunes while confined in their cells.
