Prof George Magoha

On January 24, 2023, the country was plunged into sorrow after the news broke that George Magoha, the former Education Cabinet Secretary, had died.

As per the family’s account, the ex-CS experienced a heart attack during medical care at Nairobi Hospital.

The CEO of the hospital verified that Magoha had fainted at his residence and was promptly taken to the hospital’s Emergency Department, where efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.

His passing occurred just a week following his appointment as a medical surgery lecturer at Maseno University’s School of Medicine.

Magoha received accolades from his colleagues for his initiatives within the Education Ministry, particularly his significant contribution to eradicating cheating during examinations.

The deceased professor is recognized for instigating multiple changes in Kenya’s educational system, including the duration needed to grade national exams.

He played a crucial part in executing the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Sean Cardovillis

Renowned sports journalist Sean Cardovillis passed away in September 2023 at his residence situated on Rhapta Road in Westlands.

Before his passing, Cardovillis had accumulated more than twenty years of expertise in the media field, holding positions at prominent establishments such as Capital FM, Standard Group PLC, and Nation Media Group.

During his professional journey, he received numerous recognitions, such as the Sports Award at the 2007 CNN/Multichoice African Journalist of the Year Awards and the 2007 BBC Africa Radio Award for Sports.

The well-known reporter has also reported on significant global occasions such as the Commonwealth Games, the Rio Olympics, the Africa Cup of Nations, and the London Olympics.

He interviewed golf icon Tiger Woods in Dubai during the Dubai Desert Classic.

In 2022, the reporter’s health began to decline following a diagnosis of pneumonia.

He was transferred to the High Dependency Unit in a hospital within the city. During this period, his family reached out to the public, seeking assistance in covering the accumulated medical expenses.

He’ll be recalled for his articulate speech, deep institutional knowledge, and his ability to effortlessly engage viewers and listeners.

Dennis Khaemba

Dennis Khaemba, employed as a Political Affairs producer at K24, passed away on October 24, 2023.

As per coworkers, the reporter was hurried to Kenyatta National Hospital just 48 hours following their release from the hospital.

Before his passing, Khaemba had been struggling with health problems related to his glucose levels, leading his family to quickly take him to a nearby medical facility.

However, his state deteriorated, necessitating his move to KNH, where he was declared deceased a few hours later.

His coworkers and political figures praised him as a skilled and resolute journalist devoted to his profession.

Ally B

In 2023, the music scene in Kenya faced a significant tragedy with the passing of Ally B, the well-known musician from the coastal region, resulting in a profound loss for the industry.

The well-known singer recognized for chart-topping tracks like Maria and Silali unexpectedly became unwell and was swiftly taken to Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital, where he was subsequently declared deceased.

Other artists praised him as a gifted musician who contributed significantly to shaping the music scene during the mid-2000s.

President William Ruto characterized Ally B as an artist who utilized his musical abilities to promote cohesion and concord within the community.

“Ali Khamisi Mwanguli inscribed his message of peace deep within our hearts, and we will forever carry that meaningful tune. May God provide solace to his family, friends, and devoted fans,” Ruto stated. 

Dedan Kimathi’s Wife

Mukami Kimathi, the widow of freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi died in May 2023. 

The individual who lived to be a hundred passed away in the hospital while undergoing treatment due to respiratory issues.

She received praise for her active participation in resisting the British colonial regime and was once held in custody at the Kamiti Maximum Prison.

During the struggle for freedom, Mukami rallied young individuals who sought shelter in the woods to join the cause.

Before her passing, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua visited her at the hospital and assisted in settling her medical expenses.

While alive, Mukami advocated to the government for help in finding her husband’s body to give him a proper farewell.
