DP Gachagua Accuses Uhuru of Meddling in Government Affairs

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has been accused by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of interfering with the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Gachagua claims that the former President squandered his two terms by engaging in dirty politics and sabotaging the farmers’ fertilizer subsidy program.

“People who sabotaged farmers, and undermined food security for parochial politics, have no business telling us how to work. And if they want to know how things are going at work, they should come here,” he said.

“People are working day and night to make interventions to bring the cost of food down and they’re here trying to introduce politics of telling people how they should work. They had their chance to work, and they brought this country to its knees economically; give us time to see how we can rebuild this economy through practical interventions such as increased agricultural production.”

The DP spoke at the Mombasa Railway Terminus on Friday as he flagged off thousands of bags of cheap fertilizer bound for the country’s agricultural breadbaskets.

Gachagua stated that the government has accelerated the distribution of low-cost farm inputs so that farmers can have them in time for the planting season, which begins next month.

He stated that the fertilizers should be delivered to the majority of the farmers in the 12 pilot counties by the middle of next month.

“The administration is focused on increasing agricultural productivity to ensure lower food costs and, ultimately, lower living costs,” said the DP.

The first batch of 17,840 bags is being transported by Kenya Railways wagons to Nakuru County, while another 17,840 bags are being transported to Webuye in Bungoma.

Narok, Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia, West Pokot, Migori, Kakamega, Bomet, Kericho, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Nandi are among the other counties set to benefit from the subsidy program.

The government intends to distribute at least 6 million bags of subsidized fertilizer as part of its efforts to significantly reduce the cost of producing staple foods like maize and other cereals.

Farmers will pay Ksh.3,500 per bag for the fertilizers, compared to the market price of Ksh.6,000.

“We ask our farmers to take advantage of this program which aims at increasing production in their farms. The price of unga will fall. So far, it has been decreasing, and we expect prices to continue to fall,” said the DP.
