Kimani Ichung’wah Calls to Abolish Utamaduni Day

Kimani Ichung’wah, majority leader of the National Assembly and Kikuyu member of parliament, has suggested annulling Utamaduni Day as a public holiday.

The Member of Parliament, by introducing the Statute Law (Miscellaneous Amendments) (No.2) Bill, 2023, intends to amend the Public Holidays Act to eliminate the observance of the October 10 holiday.

“The bill proposes to amend the Public Holidays Act to delete the provision of Utamaduni Day as a public holiday,” reads part of the bill.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta established Utamaduni Day in 2019 to pay tribute to the late President Daniel Arap Moi.

Instead of Moi Day, which was observed on the same day as Utamaduni Day, the holiday was proposed.

Following an initial renaming of Boxing Day to Utamaduni Day, the government ultimately opted to reassign the occasion to its original name, Moi Day. This was determined by international regulations prohibiting a nation from renaming a holiday that is recognized worldwide.

Initially observed on December 26, 2019, Utamaduni Day will be rescheduled to October 10, 2020, in subsequent years.

Moi Day was canceled in 2017 in response to inquiries from citizens regarding its continued applicability. A court order, nevertheless, mandated its reinstatement and renaming.

There has been considerable debate regarding the number of public holidays in the nation, as some leaders contend that the calendar contains an excessive number of holidays.

Conversely, on Monday, November 13, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki issued a statement that elicited a variety of responses from Kenyans.

Except for public holidays, several statutes, including the Advocates Act, Traffic Act, Employment Act 2007, Sexual Offences Act 2006, Universities Act, Privatization Act, Energy Act 2019, Copyright Act 2001, and Children’s Act 2022, will be amended if Ichung’wah’s Bill is passed into law.

Under the new regulations of the Children’s Act 2022, adoption will be restricted to a single male applicant.
