Strathmore University Student Dies After Jumping Off Mombasa Road Mall
A 22-year-old student at Strathmore University has died after jumping off the fifth floor of Gateway Mall in Syokimau, Machakos County.
The mall management told Kenyans.co.ke that the student went to the rooftop on Tuesday night and jumped off to the ground floor.
The student died on the spot from the impact. Witnesses reported the matter to Syokimau Police Station who sent officers to the scene.
The body was moved to Montezuma Funeral Home pending investigations.
The events that led to the incidents were not immediately clear and police sources whom the management referred the reporter to did not respond by the time of publishing.
Cases of university students ending their own lives have been on the rise, something that has raised concerns among mental health experts.

The mental health crisis in the country has also extended beyond the student community.
Last week, another student from Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) jumped off an incomplete five-story building within the institution.
The second-year student failed to attend morning classes, which raised concerns from his friends who later found his body next to the incomplete building.
According to the Kenya Demographic Health Survey 2022, men aged 15-49 suffer from depression at a rate of 3.1 percent while women of the same age bracket suffer at 4 percent.
The leading causes among the youth include poverty, unemployment, the death of a loved one, substance abuse, and relationships.
