Raila must now plan his succession – former chief agent Saitabao Kanchory

Saitabao Kanchory, the former chief agent for Raila Odinga’s presidential campaign last year, believes that the Azimio leader should now retire.

Kanchory believes that Raila should be considering his succession.

The attorney stated that the former prime minister may have all the resources necessary to conduct a formidable campaign in 2027, but he would not recommend this.

Kanchory insisted that Raila’s turn in politics is over and that the only question remaining is whether he will leave the political arena with dignity.

“Raila Odinga is William Ruto’s 2027 trump card. Even as an octogenarian, Raila Odinga will most likely still have his mojo and may have the unparalleled energy, resources, support, and even desire to run again,” he said.

“But Baba must (for heaven’s sake) now plan his succession and take his last bow. Whether we like it or not, Baba’s time in the political space is up. The only question is whether he will leave the stage on a high or a low.”

The previous day, Raila stated that he was not yet prepared to leave the political arena.

Raila stated on Sunday that he will not seek retirement permission from anyone.

“Some people have been saying that they will take me back to Bondo. I want to tell them I know the way to Bondo better than them. That is my home and I know it better than anybody else,” Raila said.

“The day I decide to go back to Bondo, I will not seek permission from anyone. I will find my way there. Certainly, that time has not come; I am still here, so let them shut up.”

The former prime minister was responding to a group of Nyanza leaders who have intensified their appeals for him to retire from active politics.

Kanchory split ranks with the Raila team after he published an explosive book following his fifth failed presidential bid.

In the book, the attorney primarily faults Raila for being overly trusting of certain individuals during the campaigns, to the detriment of those who were telling him the truth and the necessary changes if he was to win the 2022 presidential elections.
