Ruto Secures Ksh 8.7 Billion Deal for Nairobi Electric Buses with US Company

President William Ruto has inked a contract with an American company for the purchase of electric buses for Nairobi’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT).

Ruto has secured Ksh 8.7 billion from Millenium Challenge Corporation (MCC) a US-based foreign aid agency.

Ruto signed the agreement in New York, United States, on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly meeting. Treasury CS Njuguna Ndungu and MCC CEO Alice Albright signed the multibillion-dollar agreement that will reduce traffic congestion by introducing high-capacity buses.

โ€œThis grant from MCC to the Government of Kenya is the largest and one of the most ambitious threshold programs that MCC has ever implemented with a partner country,โ€ MCC CEO Alice Albright said.

The CEO of MCC stated that the funding will assist Kenya in achieving urban connectivity and fostering economic development.

She added that the aid will also strengthen connections between the United States and Kenya.

”Today’s signing ceremony marks an exciting milestone in the growing partnership between Kenya and the United States,โ€ Ruto remarked.

Nairobi’s traffic congestion has been problematic, with successive regimes failing to adequately resolve the issues that cost the economy billions of dollars per day.

Multiple delays prevented the former administration’s proposed BRT initiative from commencing.

”The Government of Kenya is committed to the activities and reforms that make up our Threshold Program, which we jointly designed with MCC,โ€ CS Ndungu noted.

Kenya intends to increase investment in the transportation sector to address some of the country’s challenges.

โ€œThis planned investment will strengthen our transport and land sectors and will generate benefits for the people of Nairobi, as well as for all Kenyans,โ€ the CS remarked.

The Millennial Challenge Corporation is an independent U.S. government assistance organization that works to reduce global poverty by assisting countries worldwide.
