Sports CS Namwamba to Hand Over 4 Stadiums to KDF

Tuesday, the government will transfer the renovation of four stadiums to the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) to bring them up to international standards.

Included in this list are Talanta Sports City, Nyayo National Stadium, Kasarani Stadium, and Kipchoge Keino Stadium.

According to a statement by Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba, the decision is part of the government’s plan to complete the stadiums before the 27 September 2023 announcement by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) regarding the host of the 2027 African Cup of Nations.

Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda submitted a joint proposal earlier in the year to host the 2027 AFCON. This was a component of four proposals submitted by six nations, including Egypt, Algeria, and Ivory Coast.

According to Namwamba, Talanta Sports City will be delivered at nine o’clock in the morning. At 10:30 a.m. at Nyayo National Stadium, 11:30 a.m. at Kasarani Stadium, and 2:00 p.m. at Kipchoge Keino Stadium.

This contrasts with the Kenya Kwanza government, which accused former President Uhuru Kenyatta of militarizing government institutions.

During Uhuru’s administration, more than ten military and National Intelligence Service (NIS) officials joined the civil service.

In addition, functions were transferred from the county administration of Nairobi to the Nairobi Metropolitan Services, led by Major General Mohamed Badi.

KDF was also responsible for the renovation of the Thika-Nanyuki meter gauge railway, the Nairobi-Kisumu railway lines, and the Kisumu port.

The former president also transferred the Kenya Meat Commission (KMC) from the State Department of Agriculture to the Defence Ministry.

Further, the KDF constructed a 10,000-seater Ulinzi Sports Complex at Lang’ata Barracks which was concluded by April 13, 2022.

Previously, Namwamba had instructed Sports Kenya to prohibit the use of stadiums for any purpose other than sporting events. He stated that events such as the crusades left the stadiums in deplorable condition.
