TERRIBLE DEATH

Rishi Sunak blasts Iran’s ‘barbaric’ regime as it executes a British man accused of spying for MI6.

After being accused of spying for MI6, a British man was executed in Iran.

Alireza Akbari, who has dual Iranian citizenship, is said to have been tortured to extract a confession.

He was sentenced to death for “corruption on earth and harming the country’s internal and external security by passing on intelligence”.

Akbair, a former Iranian defense official, has denied all charges.

He had been incarcerated since 2019.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he was “appalled” by Tehran’s execution.

“This was a callous and cowardly act carried out by a barbaric regime with no regard for their own people’s human rights,” he said.

His execution comes as UK authorities investigate a uranium shipment seized at Heathrow that is suspected of being linked to Iran.

Britain had demanded that Tehran halt what Foreign Secretary James Cleverly described as a “politically motivated” execution.

According to Iranian state media, Akbari, 61, held senior positions in the country’s defense establishment.

He held positions such as “deputy minister of defense for foreign affairs” and “the secretariat of the Supreme National Security Council.”

Akbari had also been an “advisor to the commander of the navy” as well as “heading a division at the defense ministry’s research center”.

“The actions of the British spy service, in this case, have demonstrated the value of the convict, the importance of his access, and the enemy’s trust in him,” Iran’s Mizan Online reported.

Akbari appears to be discussing his contacts with Britain in a video released by Iranian media.

He also claims that the British questioned him about Iran’s top nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, who was assassinated in November 2020 in an attack blamed on Tehran’s arch-foe Israel.

Akbari, a veteran of the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war, was apprehended between March 2019 and March 2020, according to state media.

Mizan, citing a statement from Iran’s intelligence ministry, had said earlier this week that Akbari became a “key spy” for Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service, more commonly known as MI6, due to “the importance of his position”.

The official government newspaper Iran published an interview with Akbari in February 2019, identifying him as a “former deputy defense minister” during Mohammad Khatami’s presidency from 1997 to 2005.

According to Mizan, Iran executed four people accused of working with Israeli intelligence in early December.

They were hanged four days after the Supreme Court upheld their death sentence for “intelligence cooperation with the Zionist regime (Israel) and kidnapping,” according to Mizan.

The execution of Akbari comes as Iran is rocked by protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini on September 16.

After being detained for wearing an “improper” headscarf, Amini was allegedly beaten to death by the morality police.

According to a count compiled from official statements, Iran’s judiciary has confirmed that 18 people have been sentenced to death in connection with the protests.

Four of them have been executed, causing international outrage.

Massive protests are taking place across Iran in one of the regime’s most sustained challenges.
