    7-Car Accident on Nairobi-Mombasa Highway

On Saturday, an accident at Machakos Junction along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway resulted in the death of one person and the injury of several passengers in various vehicles.

Two trailers, two lorries, and three personal vehicles were involved in the incident.
Under the condition of anonymity, a police officer disclosed to PoliticalPulseChat that a Mombasa-bound trailer collided with an oncoming vehicle, causing a spill-over effect on the road.

After the collision, the previously orderly flow of traffic rapidly descended into chaos as vehicles following closely behind piled up.

This resulted in a trail of debris, leaving the vehicles gravely damaged.

According to the source, a senior citizen became trapped in one of the vehicles. The vehicle’s front end sustained significant damage.

According to him, the drivers of the two trailers, who sustained critical injuries, were hurried to a Level 5 hospital in Machakos, while the deceased was transported to the Montezuma Monalisa Funeral Home.

The accident caused a traffic jam on the highway, prompting traffic officers to divert vehicles.

A witness reported that the traffic on the dual carriageway was extensive.

The accident illustrates the alarming increase in the number of accidents on Kenyan roads.

Between January 1, 2023, and May of 2023, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) recorded a total of 1,756 fatalities resulting from motor vehicle accidents.

This was an increase from the same period the previous year when 1,679 deaths were recorded.

With 571 fatalities, pedestrians accounted for the most of these casualties, followed by motorcycle operators with 449.

In response to this alarming trend, the National Traffic Safety Administration has collaborated with counties along main roads to conduct road safety campaigns aimed at reducing the number of fatal accidents in the country.
