4,000 Kenyans Invited for Green Army Program Interviews

The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) announced on Sunday that 4,000 Kenyans are presently being interviewed for the Green Army Program.

This program is consistent with President William Ruto’s plan to attain a forest cover of 30 percent by 2023.

Young Kenyans will be tasked with sowing 15 billion seedlings over ten years as part of this initiative.

To this purpose, the Green Army will be expected to plant and nurture 1.5 billion seedlings annually.

โ€œApplications were received and interviews are expected to be conducted on a day to be announced in the coming weeks,โ€ KFS announced, clarifying no new applications would be made.

The successful candidates will be enrolled as nursery laborers under the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change once they are enlisted.

The nursery employees will contribute to the national tree growing and ecosystem restoration program by, among other forestry duties, raising tree seedlings, planting trees, and performing silvicultural operations in forests.

KFC has announced that it will implement a comprehensive set of measures to ensure that the seedlings planted by the Green Army do not perish.

โ€œThese measures include regular monitoring, proper watering, protection from pests, and community engagement to foster stewardship,โ€ KFS announced.

KFS has developed a mobile application called Jaza Miti that will trace trees planted across the country to facilitate the Green Army’s monitoring efforts.

During the inauguration of the 15-billion-tree program in December 2022, President William Ruto disclosed that the initiative aimed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, halt deforestation, and restore 5.1 million hectares of deforested and degraded landscapes.

According to KFS, there are currently 42,4 million seedlings available in nurseries, of which 22 million are suitable for planting during the present wet season.

The Green Army’s first mission will be to ensure that over 21 million seedlings are planted across the country.
