23 Leaders Rally Behind Gachagua, Issue Demands to PS Omollo
23 leaders have responded to Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo’s rejection of Rigathi Gachagua’s claim that the government is deliberately enabling alcoholism in the Mount Kenya region.
In a statement issued on Monday, December 23, the leaders criticized the PS for dismissing the issue and failing to address the specific concerns highlighted by the former Deputy President in his Sunday remarks.
“Today, the Principal Secretary Internal Security and National Administration responded via a press statement. However, he did not address the specific concerns raised by HE Rigathi Gachagua,” read part of the statement.
One key issue they demanded clarification on was whether efforts to combat the production, distribution, sale, and consumption of illicit brews during Gachagua’s tenure had been effective.
They also sought answers on whether illicit brews had re-emerged in the Mount Kenya region following Gachagua’s departure from office and, if so, the reasons behind this resurgence.
The leaders insisted that the PS provide detailed explanations regarding the licensing of multiple companies to produce and distribute alcohol in the region.
“If the PS were being transparent, he would have disclosed details of all 29 companies dealing with second-generation alcohol, including where and when they were vetted and the specific officers involved,” the statement asserted.

Additionally, they demanded a list of the 15 companies approved to sell second-generation alcohol, along with comprehensive information about their locations and operational guidelines.
“The PS should confirm whether the 13 companies he recently licensed are designated to operate exclusively in the Mt Kenya Region and, if so, whether he vetted them,” they added.
The leaders dismissed claims that the issue was politically motivated, emphasizing that Gachagua, despite his contested removal from office, retains the right to address the national problems.
“As for the PS asking for evidence to support Gachagua’s statements, one only needs to visit any shopping center in the Mt Kenya Region to see the reality,” the leaders concluded.
The statement was endorsed by notable Gachagua allies, including Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa, Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba, Embakasi North MP James Gakuya, Nyandarua Senator John Methu, and Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu.
