The National Treasury has released an official statement concerning the death of Evans Chirchir, an intern who sadly passed away in a road accident over the weekend of August 31, 2024.
Police officers had his body registered at Machakos Level 5 hospital morgue, having discovered it there.
This incident triggered a flurry of speculation on social media and in certain media outlets about Chirchir’s professional role and the details surrounding his death.
In a press release dated September 5, 2024, Treasury PS Chris Kiptoo expressed condolences to Chirchir’s family and friends and condemned the dissemination of inaccurate and misleading information.
The Treasury clarified that Chirchir had been an intern under the Public Service Internship Program (PSIP) Cohort 6 since February 1, 2024, and was assigned to the procurement section.
However, he was not involved in any procurement decision-making or tendering activities during his internship.
The Treasury’s statement detailed that Chirchir’s disappearance was first noted on the evening of August 31, 2024, following a private event in the Kyumvi area of Machakos Junction.
Since it was the weekend, Chirchir was off duty at the time.

The statement emphasized, “He was not involved in any sensitive or decision-making roles within the department, and the incident occurred during his private time.”
The Treasury requested that the public avoid spreading unverified information, noting that such actions could cause unnecessary distress to Chirchir’s family and damage the institution’s reputation.
The government has urged patience while investigative agencies look into the circumstances surrounding Chirchir’s death.
As the investigation progressed, the National Treasury reaffirmed its commitment to full transparency and extended its deepest sympathies to the Chirchir family during this challenging period.
Evans Chirchir was among many young Kenyans participating in the government’s PSIP, which provides practical experience for university graduates.
Since its launch, the program has placed thousands of interns in various government institutions, including the National Treasury.
