“You Are an Embarrassment”- Martha Karua Slams Senate Speaker Amason Kingi
Narc Kenya Party leader Martha Karua has criticized Senate Speaker Amason Kingi for remarks he made during the funeral of Moses Wetangula’s mother, the National Assembly Speaker.
In her statement dated January 4, Karua expressed disappointment in Kingi, describing his comments as a disgrace to the legal profession. She took issue with Kingiโs call for action against individuals who misuse social media, arguing that existing laws are sufficient to address such concerns. Karua also condemned recent abductions, labeling them as unlawful and unjustifiable.
“Absolute madness,” she wrote. “Amason Kingi, you are an embarrassment to the legal fraternity. Anyone suspected of committing a crime should face legal action, not abduction or torture.”
Kingi’s remarks at the Bungoma County funeral highlighted his concerns about the rising indiscipline among social media users. While acknowledging that criticism of the government is acceptable, Kingi insisted that personal attacks on leaders crossed the line.

โIndiscipline has grown in our country, and some people claim it is democracy. Criticizing the government is fine, but getting personal is unacceptable,โ Kingi stated.
His comments sparked a backlash from various leaders. Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna called out Kingi, arguing that the law he referenced was unconstitutional. Sifuna stressed that freedom of speech is protected under Article 33 of the Constitution and cannot be restricted beyond the outlined limits.
“If those giving Kingi advice are the ones President Ruto listens to, he is in deeper trouble than he realizes,” Sifuna remarked. “The Computer Misuse law cited by some leaders is also unconstitutional. Social media isn’t the problemโthe issue lies in the government policies that continue to harm Kenyans.”
This debate highlights the growing tension between freedom of speech and calls for stricter regulations on social media use.
