Why Raila Has Summoned ODM Troops: Key Meeting to Address Leadership Disputes and Regional Tensions
ODM leader Raila Odinga is set to lead an important meeting on Friday to develop a strategy for distributing top party positions amidst increasing discontent.
The party faces instability as prominent members vie for roles that have become vacant following recent Cabinet appointments.
Indications suggest Raila, who is heavily campaigning for a continental position, must carefully navigate rising tensions to appease his key supporters.
Regions that strongly back Raila are fiercely competing for the party’s key leadership roles.
Raila’s deputies, Hassan Joho and Wycliffe Oparanya, have been appointed as Cabinet Secretaries for Mining and Blue Economy, and Cooperatives and SMEs Development respectively.
Their departure has sparked intense disputes within the party, with some leaders aggressively competing for these positions.
Concerns are growing that this competition could damage the ODM party and lead to internal conflicts as regional leaders vie to fill Joho and Oparanya’s roles.
Gossipa2z.com has learned that Raila will preside over a Central Management Committee meeting on August 9 to finalize the distribution of these positions.
This meeting is crucial to avoid a contentious split, as some senior party members have threatened to resign if they are not appointed to top posts.

“The Central Management Committee will meet on August 9 to discuss important issues, including resolving leadership disputes,” an ODM insider revealed.
Raila is facing pressure from governors who want to be appointed as deputy party leaders.
These positions hold significant influence and could impact the party’s nomination process, giving those in these roles a notable advantage.
Governors Simba Arati (Kisii), Abdulswamad Nassir (Mombasa), and Gideon Mung’aro are vigorously campaigning for the two top ODM roles.
ODM MPs from the coast are divided over Mung’aro and Nassir, risking a rift within the party’s coastal support base.
On Monday, Raila informed Kisii and Nyamira MPs that the deputy party leader posts would not be available in their region.
Arati attended a meeting at a Nairobi hotel where Raila reportedly dismissed his candidacy, arguing it would disrupt the regional balance ODM had established.
Instead, Raila seems focused on appointing leaders from Western Kenya and the Coast, regions where Oparanya and Joho were based.
Reports suggest the positions may be reserved for Nassir and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi.
Raila believes this approach will maintain party stability by adhering to the regional formula for fair leadership distribution.

On Wednesday evening, Raila met with Arati, Nassir, and other ODM figures in an informal session to address their differences.
Arati, a former two-term MP for Dagoretti North, has gained support from some ODM branches, including the council of party chairpersons.
“Arati has been a steadfast contributor to the party’s growth, both as an MP and now as governor of Kisii. We urge Raila to consider him for a leadership role,” said Makadara MP George Aladwa.
Aladwa, who chairs the council of ODM branch chairpersons, is advocating for Arati and Mung’aro.
This week, Kilifi leaders voiced support for Mung’aro, highlighting his loyalty and contributions to the party.
Kilifi residents, led by ODM Malindi Town ward coordinator Stephen Opiyo, urged the party to recognize Mung’aro’s dedication.
The supporters recalled a period when Nassir’s close ties with President William Ruto were viewed unfavorably by ODM leaders.
In Mombasa, ODM leaders are divided, with Changamwe MP Omar Mwinyi opposing Nassir for the deputy party leader role, arguing that he lacks the necessary qualifications.
“This position is crucial and should be filled by someone with the right qualities, who can manage and inspire their team effectively,” Mwinyi said.
Mwinyi expressed that while he does not dislike Nassir personally, many Mombasa leaders have issues with him.
The National Chairman position is also contested following John Mbadi’s nomination as the National Treasury and Planning Cabinet Secretary.
Reports suggest Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga might be considered for this role to balance UDA’s leadership, which includes Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire as chairperson.
Wanga is also rumored to be vying for the deputy party leader role, with other notable candidates including Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang’ and Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina.
