On Sunday, Moses Kuria, the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, convened a meeting with Members of Parliament from Uganda near the Busia border, which divides the two countries.

The Minister of Culture and Sports received an invitation from Busia Governor Paul Otuoma to officially start three marathon events designed to promote harmony among the diverse communities residing along the border.

Kuria characterized the journey as a professional excursion to the county, aiming to enhance health awareness via sports-related events.

“The race, not only brings together the residents of Busia in a unity of purpose but also promotes the need for health awareness and general wellness through sports.” the CS stated.

“The 3 part race, divided into 5km, 10km, and 15km, leading to Uganda, is a notable testament of the close ties we continue to foster with our neighbors across borders.”

Kuria was accompanied by numerous other leaders, including MSME Principal Secretary Susan Mangeni and Teso South MP Mary Emase.

The gathering also included five Ugandan parliamentarians along with members of the Busia County Assembly (MCAs).

Upon receiving the delegation, the CS expressed gratitude to the Ugandan President for his support of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s candidacy for the Africa Union Commission.

“I am happy to be here for the cross-border marathon. Apart from Marathon, advocated for unity between Kenya and Uganda. I welcome you in the spirit of the East African Community,” he stated.

The Busia Border Marathon, which traditionally took place every year in the border county, was suspended because of the COVID-19 pandemic but made a comeback in April 2023.

As per the organizer of the event, the race offers various additional health advantages such as blood donation, cancer screening, diabetes checks, and blood pressure assessments, among other benefits.

“This marathon will give a platform for the residents of Busia to come out in large numbers and participate in the race,” the event’s coordinator Sarah Martha told the press in 2023.

“We will be having awards for winners of various categories for both men and women in 10 and 15-kilometer races.”

This year’s race takes place shortly after Kenya and Uganda struck a deal permitting the latter to keep importing its oil via the Port of Mombasa, just a week prior.

Before, Uganda aimed to secure oil import agreements with neighboring nations due to dissatisfaction with high prices and unjust trade practices of oil cartels in Kenya.

The first shipment is expected to take place in May this year.
