Why I Shelved My Ambitions to be ODM Deputy Party Leader – Edwin Sifuna
On Friday, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who also serves as the Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party, explained why he decided to forgo his bid to become the Deputy Party Leader.
In an interview with Spice FM, Sifuna shared that he had initially hoped to advance from his role as Secretary General to the Deputy Party Leader. However, he chose to postpone these ambitions for the time being.
Sifuna noted that party positions are integral to the organization’s core, meaning his transition to the Deputy Party Leader would require significant adjustments and realignments. Consequently, he opted to allow others to assume those roles for now.
“I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about the ‘heart’ of the party. I’m not sure if it’s coincidental, but I had intended to elevate from my role as Secretary General to Deputy Party Leader, which I saw as a promotion,” he explained.
He continued, “I was told that some positions are central to the party’s core and cannot be vacated for others to be pursued.”

Sifuna also addressed rumors that suggested some party members were pushing for his removal, dismissing these claims as mere propaganda.
Additionally, he tackled reports of discord within Azimio following ODM’s decision to join the government. He asserted that Azimio would be more successful in the future if its members remained united.
Despite some ODM members taking on prominent roles within the government, Sifuna emphasized that the party remains in opposition.
“ODM is still an opposition party. We are part of the Minority Party in both the National Assembly and the Senate, and we will continue to fulfill our role in that capacity,” he stated.
Sifuna reassured that the Raila-led party would persist in holding the government accountable. His comments came just hours before Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua announced he would not make concessions for ODM leaders who have recently joined the government.
