Why Gachagua’s Ally Wants Tuesday’s Impeachment Debate Relocated From Parliament

Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa has submitted a request to Parliament, urging that the debate regarding the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, scheduled for Tuesday, take place at Kasarani Stadium or another larger venue.

In a letter to Speakers Moses Wetangula (National Assembly) and Amason Kingi (Senate), the Deputy President’s ally argued that moving the debate from Parliament would allow more Kenyans to participate in the proceedings.

He emphasized that the impeachment discussion is a matter of national significance, necessitating public involvement.

“Given that the parliamentary gallery can only hold around 300 members of the public, I suggest that all applicable provisions in the Parliamentary Standing Orders be invoked to move Tuesday’s session to Kasarani Stadium or a venue of equivalent size,” Thang’wa stated in his letter.

“This relocation would enable a higher turnout of the public, similar to the attendance during the swearing-in ceremony of President William Ruto and his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua following the 2022 general elections. The importance of this debate warrants a comparable level of national engagement.”

Additionally, the Kiambu Senator proposed that Parliament arrange for large screens to be set up nationwide, allowing citizens to follow the discussions in real time.

“To conclude, I want to stress that the public is eagerly anticipating your prompt announcement regarding the proceedings scheduled for Tuesday, October 8, 2024. Citizens across the nation are prepared to come out in large numbers, if not millions, to witness democracy in action and hold their leaders accountable,” he expressed.

“I am confident that you will approach this issue with the seriousness and urgency it deserves, upholding justice, transparency, and public confidence.”

Members of Parliament are slated to discuss and vote on the impeachment motion on Tuesday, October 8.

Currently, there is ongoing public engagement ahead of the expected debate.

If the MPs decide to impeach the Deputy President, the matter will then be forwarded to the Senate, which will ultimately determine the Deputy President’s fate.
