On Friday, February 2, a church service was conducted in Nairobi to commemorate the life of Lucy Wanjiru Muhinga, the late wife of Amos Kimunya, the former Kipipiri MP, attended by his family.
Lucy was praised as a symbol of hope and a source of strength, her life serving as proof of the significant influence one person can exert on the lives of numerous others.
Amos Kimunya and Lucy’s romantic journey began at the University of Nairobi in 1984, where they both pursued the Bachelor of Commerce program.
Amid the academic hustle, their journeys converged, giving rise to a companionship that would traverse the challenges and victories of life side by side.
Their romantic journey, characterized by a deep mutual admiration and the pursuit of common aspirations, brought them to the wedding altar, laying the foundation for a life brimming with meaning and enthusiasm.
Misfortune befell Lucy not long after her 1988 honeymoon, as she sadly lost her mother.
The couple embraced Lucy’s younger siblings, emphasizing their dedication to family.
The requiem mass for Lucy depicted a woman who enthusiastically embraced life, finding happiness in the simple pleasures of dancing and playing golf, a sentiment shared by those in mourning.
Lucy’s outlook on life was marked by a deep commitment to putting others before herself and actively engaging in community service.
Despite her achievements, which encompassed a significant period at the United Nations and influential positions like being the captain of the Muthaiga Golf Club, she maintained a down-to-earth approach by placing the welfare of others ahead of her own.
During their marriage, Lucy’s spouse revealed that she decided against managing an individual bank account, preferring a joint account as a demonstration of their steadfast trust and unity.
Upon Kimunya’s election as an MP in 2002 and subsequent appointment as a Cabinet minister by the late President Mwai Kibaki in 2003, she decided to leave her professional career to assist and support him, frequently aiding in the administration of the constituency.

Her boundless generosity had no limits. During family vacations, she seized the chance to lavish her loved ones with presents, willingly sacrificing her indulgences to bring joy to others. She possessed a particular talent for selecting handbags.
While on a foreign excursion in 1991, the pair visited a store in Rome, Italy. During their shopping expedition, the store owner recommended checking out a more diverse selection at another establishment in Milan. Although urged to visit Milan, the woman was dissatisfied with the merchandise there and proposed returning to Rome instead.
The closed shop prompted them to adjust their travel arrangements, leading them to stay overnight in Rome. Their revised plans involved waiting for the shop to reopen, purchasing her desired bags, and then continuing to their next destination.
Apart from her private affairs, Lucy’s dedication to philanthropy was evident. She illuminated with a strong passion for education, supporting more than 200 orphans to guarantee they were afforded the opportunities she deemed every child’s rightful privilege.
Her commitment to environmental causes was remarkable, demonstrated by her effort to plant more than 600,000 tree seedlings in Kipipiri. This initiative played a significant role in enhancing the area’s greenery and promoting sustainability.
The inauguration of Foothills School in Kipipiri in 2014, which occurred after Amos experienced a political setback, could be considered the culmination of Lucy’s dedication to her community.
This undertaking demonstrated her profound conviction in the ability of education to disrupt the cycle of poverty and enable succeeding generations.
