“Where have they taken him?” Heartbroken Father Cries in Court Over Billy Mwangi’s Abduction

Gerald Mwangi, father to 24-year-old Billy Mwangi, one of six recent abduction victims allegedly linked to police operations, broke down in a Nairobi court on Tuesday, desperately asking for his sonโ€™s whereabouts. Billy was abducted on Saturday, December 21, while at a barber shop in Embu town.

According to Gerald, four hooded men seized his son as he waited for a haircut. They forced him into a station wagon and a double-cabin pick-up truck before speeding away. โ€œThey mishandled my son and threw him into the car. His phone was switched off, and we havenโ€™t heard from him since,โ€ a distraught Gerald shared in court.

Gerald, who traveled from Embu to Nairobi, revealed the emotional toll the disappearance has taken on his family. โ€œMy wife has collapsed multiple times from high blood pressure. I came here hoping to see my son, but heโ€™s not here. I just pray I donโ€™t die of high blood pressure myself. Where is my son?โ€

The High Court had issued a Habeas Corpus order on Monday, demanding the production of all six abductees by 11:00 a.m Tuesday, unless authorities provided valid reasons for their detention.

Additionally, a conservatory order was issued to prevent the police or other respondents from charging or prosecuting the victims without court approval.

Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja, one of the respondents, was summoned to personally address the court regarding the missing individuals. However, neither Kanja nor the abductees appeared in court. Instead, a representative was sent on his behalf.

Senior Counsel Martha Karua, representing the victims, criticized the delays in the case. โ€œA Habeas Corpus application is urgent. The question is simple: do you have them? If yes, produce them. Itโ€™s the responsibility of security agents to know where they are,โ€ she stated.

Karua also opposed requests for more time to file affidavits, emphasizing the impact on the families. โ€œBy January 3, it will already be 10 days. Asking for more time is cruel to these families.โ€

Despite Karuaโ€™s plea, the court scheduled the case for hearing on January 8, with instructions that the abductees, if located, must be presented to the nearest High Court immediately.
