The beneficiaries of security officers who perished in the line of duty are entitled to compensation in the millions, according to Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale.

Wednesday, October 10, Duale addressed the Senate in response to queries regarding the welfare of Kenya’s security forces and the challenges they face while serving.

Duale described the compensation provisions, which vary depending on the location of service.

“…within thirty days … if the officer is serving within our country immediately gets Kshs 4 million above pension which has a component called death gratuity,” said Duale.

The death gratuity is a lump sum paid to the dependents or beneficiaries of a service member slain in the line of duty.

CS Duale explained that, in addition to the Kshs 4 million, the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN) provide USD 50,000 to the family of a deployed officer. This equates to more than 11 million Kenyan shillings.

However, Duale noted that familial disputes may prevent the officers’ beneficiaries from receiving compensation.
