Wamuchomba Clashes With ODM MP Over Gachagua’s Mentality

On Tuesday, October 8, the National Assembly witnessed a brief confrontation between Ruaraka MP TJ Kajwang and his Githunguri counterpart Gathoni Wamuchomba regarding the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The clash began when Kajwang explained his reasons for supporting the impeachment motion. He argued that Gachagua lacked concern for national interests and had taken office for personal benefit.

Kajwang said, “His mindset is that he helped President Ruto win votes, and now it’s his turn to benefit.” He added, “For that reason alone, I would vote for his impeachment because I want everyone, including myself, to be served as a taxpayer.”

Wamuchomba, a staunch Gachagua supporter, interrupted to challenge Kajwang’s remarks, questioning his ability to assess Gachagua’s intentions.

“Mr. Speaker, is Honourable Kajwang to claim the Deputy President has a selfish mindset? Can he prove that? Does he have a device to measure such mentalities?” she asked, as the chamber became increasingly rowdy.

Agitated by Wamuchomba’s comments and her mispronunciation of his name, Kajwang responded by reaffirming his commitment to removing Gachagua from office.

Wamuchomba’s defense of Gachagua was expected, despite the odds against the DP. She previously suggested that Gachagua had been targeted by political figures since his time in UDA, particularly those who favored Interior CS Kithure Kindiki for the role of Deputy President.

The broader context: Gachagua is currently facing significant challenges as at least 291 MPs are reportedly in favor of his impeachment.

Gachagua’s recent media briefing, where he defended himself against allegations of accumulating KSh 5.2 billion in wealth over two years, appears to have worsened his situation. Kibwezi West MP Mutuse Mwengi used Gachagua’s statements as further evidence to support his impeachment case.

After presenting 11 charges against Gachagua, Mutuse urged fellow MPs to consider the best interests of their constituents when voting on the motion, stating, โ€œAs you prepare to vote, I encourage you to think of your people. Please vote to impeach Rigathi Gachagua.โ€

Gachagua will have an opportunity to present his defense before Parliament, after which the MPs will vote on whether to impeach him.

If the motion succeeds, the case will move to the Senate, where a trial will take place based on the charges against him.

The Senate will then vote on whether Gachagua should be removed from office. If impeached, Gachagua would lose his position, though he could appeal the decision in court.
