Wa Iria: Why I should be made the Mt Kenya kingpin

Mwangi Wa Iria, the former governor of Muranga, has contributed to the ongoing discourse regarding the Mt. Kenya kingpin, stating that he meets the necessary criteria.

According to Wa Iria, the sole individual who should be recognized as the de facto leader of the region is one who attempted to run for president in the most recent election.

The leader of the Usawa party reaffirmed his previous position that every community should have entered a candidate for the statehouse election but clarified that the position is deserving of only a candidate who has amassed a significant number of votes and supporters.

“There is no Mt Kenya region leader who contested and garnered more votes than the other, the only person who attempted is Wa Iria and so I am the one who is supposed to be the kingpin,” he said.

“I took my papers. No one becomes a kingpin without presenting himself as a candidate, they all feared…”

Without specifying whom, Wa Iria reprimanded regional leaders vying for the position.

Furthermore, he declared his intention to run for the presidency once more in 2027.

“Kiti ya urais mimi nitasimama, wanichague ili niwatetee…wanichague na ile kura watanichagua, wakinipatia kura milioni nne nitakuwa kingpin wao wa milioni nne,” he said.

(Should they elect me to represent them, I will run for the presidency; if elected, I will be their kingpin of four million ballots.)

His declaration comes just a few days after Maina Njenga, a politician, declared himself the new kingpin of the vote-rich region.

The former leader of the Mungiki sect stated in an exclusive interview with the Star that he aspires to be “the CEO” of Mount Kenya to address the region’s current problems.

According to him, the region’s perceived kingpin, retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, has chosen to maintain a low profile, and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has avoided the debate.

“When I say I want to be the CEO of Mt Kenya, it is because I want to solve the problems of the region,” he said.

Gachagua, according to Njenga, has stated publicly that he has no desire to be the kingpin of the region due to the “heat” on Mount Kenya.

A week ago, Gachagua criticized proponents of the kingship conflict narrative, stating unequivocally that he has less interest in a position that the Constitution does not provide for.

“I do not have time for that kingpin ship nonsense, I don’t have that time because I am very busy,” Gachagua during a church service in Kiambu.

“This kingpin position, where is the office located, how much is the salary? If there are people who want that office, I’m not part of it because I am the deputy president. My office is located in Harambee House and Karen. There is a salary and a job to do.”
