Controversial blogger Aoko Otieno, known as Maverick Aoko, received crucial support from her father when she appeared in court.
Aokoโs arrest from her residence and subsequent transfer to Muthaiga Police Station on Friday, September 16, sparked a wave of social media campaigns demanding her release.
What led to Aoko Otienoโs arrest?
On Monday, September 19, Aoko, formerly with Standard Media, was visibly emotional as she encountered her father before her charges were formally read.
A video shared on Facebook by Zipporah Weru shows the touching moment at the Milimani Law Courts where Aoko and her father embrace, with her father offering comfort before she takes her place in the dock.

What were the charges against Aoko?
The charge sheet reveals that Aoko faced accusations of disseminating false information, cyber harassment, and misusing electronic data.
Specifically, she is charged with unlawfully posting defamatory and threatening content about individuals identified as ‘Amber Ray’ and ‘Jamal’ on her X platform.
Following her not-guilty plea to three counts of a false information publication, Aoko was granted release on a KSh 100,000 cash bail.
On her Twitter account, Aoko claimed that her phone and laptop, essential for her work, had been seized by the police.
Twitter suspends Aokoโs account
Separately, Aoko Otienoโs Twitter account, which boasted over 77,000 followers, was suspended on Tuesday, October 6, 2023.
Known for her blunt commentary, the Kenyan writer had stirred controversy with her feminist views, often aligning with men and criticizing women. She had previously garnered attention for her remarks equating women eating out without justification to theft.
