US Troops Prepare Facilities in Haiti Ahead of Kenyan Police Deployment
US troops are currently in Haiti constructing accommodations and other facilities ahead of the arrival of Kenyan police officers set to be deployed to the troubled country.
Reports from Caribbean media outlets indicate that the troops are part of a group of contractors in Haiti preparing for the stay of around 1,000 Kenyan troops.
On Friday, May 3, a US Southern Command aircraft landed in Haiti, transporting civilian contractors.
These specialists are advising the Pentagon and planning an area where Kenyan police officers will be based during their peacekeeping mission.
The construction of the military base is anticipated to take 45 days.
A US official mentioned that Kenyan troops are expected to arrive in Haiti on May 24, coinciding with President William Ruto’s visit to the US.
This same official, speaking to the Miami Herald, stated that Ruto and his wife Rachel will be hosted by President Joe Biden and his wife Jill in honor of the 60th anniversary of US-Kenya diplomatic relations.

“The initial deployment will occur around the time of his state visit,” the official noted, without specifying exact dates.
The official stressed the importance of ensuring the Kenyan troops have proper housing and support.
This development follows the appointment of new Prime Minister Fritz Bélizaire by the transitional council, succeeding Ariel Henry who stepped down in March.
Bélizaire has been seeking international support from law enforcement to combat gangs and restore stability in the Caribbean nation.
Kenya has offered to send 1,000 police officers to lead the Multinational Support Mission in the war-torn country, though nearly a year later, the officers have yet to be deployed.
Alongside Kenya, other countries have pledged financial, equipment, and troop support.
President Ruto has reassured the global community that Kenya intends to proceed with its commitment, despite opposition from domestic politicians.
