US Special Forces Eliminate 10 Al-Shabaab Terrorists in Joint Operation With KDF

The United States special forces affiliated with the US Africa Command announced on July 9 that they eliminated ten Al-Shabaab terrorists in a joint operation with the Kenya Defense Forces and the Somali National Army.

Defense Cabinet Secretary (CS) Aden Duale reported in a tweet that the joint operation conducted three self-defense airstrikes in Afmadow, Somalia. Duale shared a statement issued by the US military.

Three Kenyans were among the militants killed during the operation, according to Counter Terrorism and Security Intelligence (CTNSIS).

“Working with the Somali National Army, U.S. Africa Command’s preliminary assessment is that the U.S. airstrike killed ten Al-Shabaab terrorists and that no civilians were injured or killed,” read the statement.

In a statement issued after the strikes, the US military referred to the terrorist organization as “the largest and most kinetically active Al-Qaeda network in the world.”

In addition, it was stated that Al-Shabaab had demonstrated both the willingness and capability to attack partner forces operating in Somalia, including the United States military, necessitating the high-stakes military operation.

According to CTNSIS, the joint operation deployed operatives in the region and seized an Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) factory and a Suicide Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device (SVBIED).
Two additional militants were Ethiopians.

The commandos dispatched to the Hagar region to carry out the mission were effectively extracted with no reported casualties.

A few days prior, KDF snipers had neutralized a suicide bomber who had targeted a security agency compound in Lamu County.

Garowe Online, a Somali publication, reported on Thursday, July 6 that the suicide bomber was apprehended as he approached Camp Sarira in Lamu.
