US Issues Terror Alert for Americans in Kenya Over al-Shabaab Threat
The United States has issued a fresh terror alert for its citizens living in or traveling to Kenya, warning of โongoing and persistent terror threats.โ
In a security advisory released on Tuesday, August 19, the US Department of Stateโs Bureau of Consular Affairs highlighted al-Shabaab as a major threat, particularly in Nairobi and other parts of the country.
โTerrorist groups, such as al-Shabaab, remain a serious risk not only across Kenya but also within the capital, Nairobi,โ the advisory stated.
The US government cautioned American tourists and residents to stay alert, especially in busy public spaces that attract international visitors. Extremist groups, it warned, often strike without notice.
High-risk locations include hotels, restaurants, malls, markets, embassies, schools, police stations, places of worship, and other areas frequently visited by foreigners.

The alert also linked potential threats to key anniversaries, such as the 1998 US Embassy bombing in Nairobi (August 7), the September 11 attacks in the US, and the 2013 Westgate Mall siege (September 21). These dates, the State Department noted, carry โsymbolic valueโ that extremist groups may seek to exploit.
Americans in Kenya have been urged to:
- Review their personal security measures.
- Avoid large gatherings, protests, and crowded events.
- Keep a low profile and remain aware of their surroundings.
- Monitor local news updates for safety information.
The advisory further encouraged US citizens to register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive real-time alerts and enable the embassy to assist during emergencies.
Although Washington and Nairobi continue to work closely on counterterrorism, security advisories have become more frequent. This latest warning follows earlier alerts issued during anti-government protests and reports of instability along Kenyaโs borders.
