Uhuru’s Veiled Message to Ruto Following the Breakdown of Bipartisan Negotiations

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta issued a subtle warning to current President William Ruto on Saturday, May 27 regarding the collapse of bipartisan negotiations.

In a lecture titled “Deepening Democracy for Development and Integration” delivered at the International Conference Center in Abuja as part of the 2023 Presidential Inauguration Lecture, Uhuru indicated that he was pushing for Kenyan unity talks.

Thus, he cautioned the current regime against promoting a winner-takes-all mentality, arguing that doing so would lead to division and degeneration.

Uhuru also believed that ignoring talks with the opposition faction led by former prime minister Raila Odinga would harm the state’s development agenda strategy.

Former President George W. Bush told delegates that engaging the opposition was essential for fostering inclusiveness.

“I remain conscious of the fact that I must continue to foster peace in my native country of Kenya. I use my voice and platform to persuade, particularly those in power, that dialogue with those in opposition to their victory is neither a sign of weakness nor a denial of their victory, but rather a necessary tool for creating a more inclusive Kenya that propels forward development.

“A path that meets the needs of all members of our society. And I remind you that a winner-take-all mentality can only result in division and retard our national development agenda,” Uhuru stated.

Thus, he advised Bola Tinubu, the incoming president of Nigeria, to ensure his administration builds a prosperous and united nation.

Uhuru emphasized that he must lead a united nation regardless of whether or not Tinubu supported him during the election process. Tinubu was not present at the event.

Uhuru emphasized the significance of overcoming negative ethnicity, discrimination, and corruption further.

“I urge you to surround yourself with the voices of those who will counterbalance the extremists who feel entitled to a piece of your office. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain by reaching across political, racial, and religious lines, Uhuru stated.

After the Azimio bipartisan team accused the Kenya Kwanza side of failing to meet their demands, they suspended negotiations.

Later, Azimio declined Kenya Kwanza’s invitation to resume negotiations on Friday, May 26.

Rarieda, Otiende Amollo, a member of parliament who leads the Azimio side, indicated that they would only accept the invitation if Kenya Kwanza conceded to their demands.

“Our letter was a notification that does not require a response,” Amollo wrote. “The only response we require is a communication from them that they are willing to concede to our request on four interim measures.”

Among the issues raised by Azimio was a commitment from Kenya Kwanza to reduce the cost of living, preserve the election servers, and suspend the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) reconstitution.

Raila threatened to introduce a succession debate on Friday, May 26, if Ruto fails to meet their demands.

Kenya Kwanza’s side, on the other hand, committed to engaging Azimio whenever they convene a meeting to discuss their concerns.

“As the Kenya Kwanza faction of the coalition, we are always available for these discussions. The talks can resume as soon as tomorrow (Friday, May 26), next week, or whenever the other side informs us they are prepared to do so, according to the Kenya Kwanza side.*Reorganization for Ruto as Finance Bill
