Uhuru’s Jubilee Leadership Straightening Quest Stumbles
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta encountered his first political legal obstacle on April 29 after announcing his return to active politics at the end of April.
Since handing over power in September 2022, the former head of state had taken a backseat in politics. On Friday, April 28, he made a political comeback by calling for a Jubilee Party Special National Delegates Convention to make leadership changes.
Nelson Dzuya, the chairman of the NDC, resisted the planned expulsion of party members on May 22.
Dzuya denounced the proposed NDC on April 29, arguing that it did not adhere to the procedures outlined in Article 23 of the party’s constitution.
“The number of NEC members eligible to attend is 21, so to meet the quorum requirement, an NEC meeting must have at least nine members present.”
“Additionally, if the suspended officials were present. Their presence would have no legal significance and their numbers would not be counted,” argued Dzuya.
The Jubilee Party chairman added that Uhuru lacked the authority to convene an NDC meeting.
Dzuya explained that Uhuru ceased to be the party’s leader in March 2023. Due to Section 6(1) of the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act. Which states that a former president may not hold office in a political party for more than six months after leaving office.

In his notice calling for an NDC, the former president stated that he had followed the prescribed procedures.
“Under articles 8.1 and 10.1 of the Jubilee Party Constitution, notice is hereby issued for an NDC to be held on Monday, May 22,” the notice stated in part.
According to the notice, the meeting’s agenda included reviewing, formulating, and approving party policies, receiving a status report from the NEC, and approving any other matters.
Uhuru first caused a storm on April 26, when he stormed the Kileleshwa, Nairobi County, Jubilee Headquarters.
The former president defended the embattled Secretary General of the party, Jeremiah Kioni. Who is in danger of being replaced by East African Legislative Assembly member Kanini Kega.
At that time, Uhuru criticized the planned removal. And admonished the Kega-led faction. Telling them they were free to leave the party if they did not wish to engage in intraparty conflict.
“Kioni contacted me and informed me of the situation. I stated that I had to defend our party in solidarity with him and other party members.
Let us abide by the law and live in peace. Uhuru stated at the time, “There is no need to incite a group of people against others.”
