Uhuru Running Out of Excuses? ODM MP Tells Ex-President to Get Off the Fence and Back Ruto
Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has encouraged former President Uhuru Kenyatta to support President William Ruto for the good of the country.
While addressing a gathering in Machakos on Wednesday, March 5, Passaris pointed out that since Uhuru is the only former President still alive, he should take the lead in assisting Ruto in strengthening his administration.
She urged Uhuru to follow the example of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga by putting aside political differences and working together with Ruto and Raila to help Kenya move forward.
“Kenya has had four Presidents, but only one is still alive. It is very important for a former President to back the sitting President because if he does not, the government may struggle to function properly,” she said.
Passaris also mentioned that since Uhuru maintains close ties with Raila and Raila has shown the ability to move past political differences for the sake of the country, the former President should do the same.
“I want to plead with Uhuru Kenyatta. You are the only living former President. You have invested heavily in this country, your family lives here, and you have the power to sit down with Ruto, Raila, and other leaders to guide Kenya in the right direction,” she added.
Since leaving office in 2022, Uhuru has kept a low profile and avoided active political involvement. However, in January 2024, he made a rare public appearance and encouraged Kenyan youth, commonly referred to as Gen Z, to stand up for their rights.

While speaking at the burial of his cousin, rally driver Kibathi Muigai, on January 17, Uhuru expressed his admiration for the rising influence of young people in politics.
“Many people today live in fear, but the Gen Z generation represents the future. Fight for what is rightfully yours. Do not allow anyone to take away what belongs to you,” he urged.
“Nothing should be taken from you without resistance. If you do not fight for what is yours, do not complain when it is gone,” he added.
Meanwhile, it remains uncertain whether Raila Odinga, the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement, will align himself with President Ruto or continue playing his traditional role as an opposition leader.
At the moment, Raila is concluding his discussions with supporters across the country to determine his political direction ahead of the 2027 elections.
Even though he has maintained a friendly relationship with Rutoโs Kenya Kwanza government, Raila has recently been vocal in criticizing Rutoโs administration. This could be an attempt to keep his role as an independent political figure.
