Uhuru Kenyatta Meets UN Envoy Amid Mystery Over His Whereabouts

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta held a high-level meeting on Monday with a senior United Nations official in his role as the Nairobi Process Facilitator for the East African Community.

During the meeting, Huang Xia, the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region, disclosed that he met with the former president to prepare for his upcoming briefing to the UN Security Council on the Great Lakes Region.

The virtual meeting focused on advancing the Nairobi Process and fostering better coordination between the Nairobi and Luanda initiatives.

“Our discussions centered on the next steps for the Nairobi Process and ensuring stronger collaboration between the Nairobi and Luanda Processes,” stated the UN envoy in a social media post.

In July 2022, the East African Community Heads of State appointed Uhuru Kenyatta as the facilitator to lead peace efforts and oversee the Nairobi Process implementation.

Uhuru’s role includes mediating discussions among conflicting parties, encouraging dialogue, and reaching consensus on sustainable peace solutions.

Beyond mediation, Uhuru also oversees the monitoring and evaluation of the Nairobi Process, assessing compliance with agreed terms, identifying challenges, and recommending necessary corrective actions.

He is further tasked with managing a special Fund dedicated to financing peacebuilding efforts, including mediation sessions, community engagement, and capacity-building programs.

On September 28, Uhuru was appointed to join the board of the Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa.

His role at the Forum involves providing strategic oversight and shaping the agenda for annual discussions, which are set to take place in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, from October 25-27, 2024.

In domestic politics, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, facing an impeachment threat, has sought political support from Uhuru, whom he once opposed, acknowledging him as the undisputed leader of the Mt. Kenya region.

However, the former president has remained silent, distancing himself from the political discourse.
