Uhuru Joins Raila in Mourning Protest Victims – Drives Himself to Pay Respects

On Friday, July 28, former President Uhuru Kenyatta drove himself to the Azimio la Umoja memorial service honoring those who lost their lives during the demonstrations.

The funeral service took place at the Stephen Kalonzo Command Centre in Karen.

Uhuru arrived shortly after 10:00 a.m. in his Mercedes G-wagon, accompanied by former prime minister Raila Odinga in a separate vehicle.

The tandem was greeted by Kalonzo, who was waiting alongside other opposition coalition officials.

Opiyo Wandayi, Minority Leader of the National Assembly, and Fredrick Okango, Secretary of Political Affairs for the KANU party, were also present.

This was the former President’s second public engagement in Azimio since the August 9 elections. His previous public encounter with Azimio occurred on September 7, 2022, during a gathering of coalition-elected opposition leaders.

Azimio conducted a requiem liturgy in memory of those who perished during the anti-government demonstrations. The opposition coalition conducted a vigil earlier in the week and asked its supporters to hold similar events across the country.

“We implore Kenyans to maintain harmony throughout these prayers. Additionally, we urge Kenyans to continue lighting candles and laying flowers out of respect and love for our fallen and wounded patriots.

“We would like to take this early opportunity to thank everyone who came out yesterday to maintain vigil, light candles, and lay flowers in memory of the deceased and injured. Azimio stated at the time that this exercise would continue through the weekend.

During the requiem ceremony, it is anticipated that the Azimio aristocracy will issue directives for their next course of action.

Uhuru’s decision to attend the requiem mass at the Stephen Kalonzo Command Centre occurred one week after the former Head of State addressed the media shortly after Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) agents raided his son’s home in Karen.
