Uhuru congratulates DRC’s Tshisekedi for re-election

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has formally extended his congratulations to Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo following his successful re-election as the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In a declaration, Uhuru urged Tshisekedi to collaborate inclusively with both his supporters and those who did not vote for him.

“We are working towards restoring a long-lasting peace in the nation, which will propel the fortunes of the people of the DRC and spur socio-economic growth and development in the country,” he said.

Uhuru plays the role of leading the peace efforts established to negotiate peace within the EAC-led Nairobi Peace Process.

On Sunday, the ex-president clarified in a post on X that they hadn’t offered congratulations to Tshisekedi as the President-elect because provisional results hadn’t been declared.

He claimed that he was not the author of the message supposedly requesting Tshisekedi to unite the nation.

“The office of the 4th President of the Republic of Kenya and Facilitator of the EAC-Led Nairobi Peace Process would like to disassociate itself from this news update doing the rounds within various mainstream and social media platforms,” the Sunday statement, which he refuted, reads.

Tshisekedi secured victory with approximately 73 percent of the vote, while his closest rival, Moise Katumbi, garnered 18 percent, according to officials.

The December 20th election allegedly suffered from extensive logistical issues.

In certain regions across the expansive nation, it became necessary to prolong it to a second day.

Roughly 66% of polling stations experienced delayed openings, and approximately 30% of voting machines were non-operational on the initial day of the voting process, as reported by an observer organization.

Millions of individuals stood in line for extended periods, attempting to cast their votes, while others became discouraged and left without voting.

The opposition alleged that the issues were intentionally orchestrated to manipulate the outcomes in support of 60-year-old Tshisekedi.

Approximately 44 million citizens from Congo were enrolled to participate in the election, where voters queued up to select Members of Parliament as well as provincial and municipal representatives.

However, elections were not conducted in certain areas of the eastern region due to ongoing conflicts between government forces and rebel groups that have persisted for the last thirty years.
