Ugandan Minister’s Bodyguard Complained of Being ‘Broke’ Before Fatal Shooting

It has recently come to light that the bodyguard who murdered Ugandan minister Col. (Ret.) Charles Okello Engola and then turned the gun on himself complained about financial difficulties minutes before committing the crime.

State Minister for Labour and Industrial Relations Col. (Ret.) Charles Okello Engola was shot and killed around 8 a.m. on Tuesday as he prepared to leave his home in Kyanja for work, according to Ugandan police spokesman Fred Enanga.

His bodyguard, since identified as Pte Wilson Sabiti, can be seen in a viral video firing more than 20 rounds of ammunition into the air while reportedly yelling, “How can I work for a whole minister and still be broke?”

Mr. Enanga confirmed that Pte Sabiti later committed suicide, adding that investigations into the incident have since begun.

The deceased minister’s assistant, Ronald Otim, sustained gunshot wounds and is currently receiving treatment at the Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala.

“We can confirm that one of Charles Okello Engola’s bodyguards shot and killed him this morning.” “The bodyguard later committed suicide as well,” said Mr. Enanga.

“However, we have launched an investigation to determine the murder’s motive. The deceased minister’s body has been transported to the city mortuary for an autopsy.”

Thomas Tayebwa, the vice-speaker of the Parliament, visited the scene and deemed the situation regrettable, urging the relevant security agencies to investigate it thoroughly.

“This morning’s tragic shooting of our colleague, State Minister for Labour, Employment, and Industrial Relations, Hon. Col. (Ret.) Charles Okello Engola, by his bodyguard, is very disturbing,” he said.

“I visited the family in Kyanja to convey my condolences and those of the Parliament. The police and other security agencies are investigating the motive behind this heinous murder.

The Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) issued a brief statement confirming the death and announcing the initiation of parallel investigations.

“We have learned of the tragic incident on the Kyanja ring road that resulted in the death of Colonel Charles Okello Engola this morning. We will inform the public as we investigate this matter jointly,” read the statement.
