UDA Ousts Malala as Secretary General, Names Omar Acting SG
Former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala was dismissed from his role as the Secretary General of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) on Friday following a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
In the wake of Malala’s removal, Hassan Omar Hassan, the party’s Vice Chairperson, has been appointed as the Acting Secretary General.
UDA issued a statement announcing, “The appointment of Hon Cleophas Malala as the interim Secretary General is hereby revoked, with these changes taking effect immediately.”
The decision to dismiss Malala came after extensive and consultative discussions within UDA regarding the next steps in light of recent internal developments.
In addition, UDA committed to implementing further changes in its governance and administrative practices to enhance its effectiveness and foster a more inclusive and consultative organization.
UDA emphasized the critical role of the NEC, stating, “As the governing and policy-making body of the Party, the NEC is crucial in advancing the party’s political agenda.”
The National Executive Committee also instructed the National Elections Board to proceed with necessary adjustments and continue with the grassroots elections as previously scheduled.

The NEC noted that these elections would provide UDA members the chance to select their leaders at all levels, from the polling station to the national stage.
The party highlighted the need to align policies and political strategies with the national political landscape and collective goals, stating, “We must continuously adjust our policies and guidance to reflect broader national aspirations.”
Malala’s dismissal occurred just two days after an emergency meeting was held by some UDA leaders to address recent internal divisions within the party.
At the meeting, the NEC, led by Chairperson Cecily Mbarire, condemned the recent attack on the self-proclaimed Secretary General Joe Khalende.
Embu Governor Mbarire announced plans to hold another meeting on Friday, August 2, to address what she described as unfortunate incidents.
“We have established procedures for conflict resolution within our party, and we will not tolerate the use of violence to settle disputes,” the governor asserted.
