Tyson Fury Announces Retirement from Boxing After Defeat to Oleksandr Usyk

Tyson Fury, the former world heavyweight champion, announced on Monday that he is retiring from boxing, just weeks after losing for the second time in a row to Oleksandr Usyk.

In a brief social media post, Fury, 36, shared his decision to retire, saying, “I’m going to make this short and sweet. I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing.” He also expressed his appreciation for the sport, stating, “It’s been a blast, I’ve loved every single minute of it.”

However, Fury has previously made multiple announcements about quitting boxing, only to change his mind and return to the ring. His last fight took place on December 21, when he lost to Usyk in their rematch in Riyadh. After the fight, when asked if fans would see him fight again, Fury gave a vague response, saying, “You might do, you might not do. Who knows?”

Fury has had a successful boxing career, with two stints as the heavyweight champion. His record stands at 34 wins, two losses, and one draw. He had announced his retirement in April 2022 after defeating Dillian Whyte but came back to the sport later that year.

Frank Warren, Fury’s promoter, mentioned to the BBC that he had not spoken to Fury before the retirement announcement. Warren respected Fury’s decision, saying, “If thatโ€™s what he wants to do, thatโ€™s great. Heโ€™s done everything he can do. Heโ€™s probably been the best British heavyweight of his generation.”

Furyโ€™s defeat to Usyk in their recent rematch was a unanimous decision, with all three judges scoring the fight 116-112 in favor of Usyk. The two had previously fought in May 2024, where Usyk won by split decision.

Furyโ€™s retirement likely means that the much-anticipated fight between him and fellow former world champion Anthony Joshua will not happen.
