Trailer Crashes Into Okiya Omtatah’s Car on Kisumu Highway

Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah was on Friday involved in an accident in Kisumu while heading to Busia.

The accident, which occurred around the Ojola area, happened after the driver of the trailer lost control crashing into his vehicle and throwing him off the road.

Speaking to a local media house, Omtatah noted that the trailer hit his vehicle as his driver attempted to swerve. The duo survived the accident without sustaining any injuries.

According to the senator, the trailer landed in a ditch several meters away.  

Omtatah, however, could not be reached by the time of publishing this article. 

Narrating the horrific incident, the Senator explained that he swerved after realizing the trailer had lost control, noting that he was lucky to have survived the accident.

Officers from Maseno police station have processed the scene, launching investigations into what caused the trailer to lose control.

Omtatah further stated that the safety belt held him intact on the chair, which saved him from getting injured, however, the vehicle landed on the side of the road intact. 

The driver of the trailer upon questioning stated that the brakes failed to function, forcing him to try and swerve from the main road, crashing into the senator’s vehicle. 

Omtatah further confirmed that he was able to head home after the police officers provided him with a land cruiser, to let them process his vehicle from the scene of the accident. 

A report from the National Transport and Safety Authority(NTSA) indicated that the most unsafe and deadly time to travel on Kenyan roads was between 7-9 pm, noting that 1,100 fatalities were recorded during this window.

The data further showed that 563 people lost their lives to road accidents between January 1 and February 11, 2024, with pedestrians accounting for the highest number at 216 deaths.
