Tragic Night on Kenyan Roads: Former Chief Justice’s Campaign Team Involved in Accident
Four members of former Chief Justice David Maraga’s campaign team narrowly survived a terrifying road accident on Tuesday night while travelling back to Nairobi. The incident occurred as the group was returning from accompanying fellow members of the United Green Movement (UGM).
According to Maraga, the accident involved a collision between the team’s vehicle and a lorry, which reportedly lost control and swerved off the road into their lane. Thankfully, swift action by emergency responders ensured that all four campaign members were rushed to a nearby hospital, and no fatalities were reported from this specific crash.
“We have been informed of a ghastly road accident that has occurred, involving four of our campaign team members. They have all been rushed to the hospital,” Maraga said.
He added, “We understand that the lorry veered off the road, lost control and swerved into the vehicle in the other lane. The four are part of a team that was driving from Nyamira back to Nairobi, having accompanied me.”

Maraga urged Kenyans to keep the injured in their thoughts and prayers as authorities continue to monitor their condition. Images circulating from the scene showed the team’s car severely damaged, with the front section scraped, tyres deflated, and the windscreen shattered.
Tragically, the same night saw another deadly accident in Sachangwan along the Nairobi–Nakuru–Eldoret highway. One person died while ten others were seriously injured after a collision involving three 14-seater matatus and two trucks. Nakuru County traffic enforcement officer Allan Ogolla confirmed the incident, highlighting the risks that continue to plague Kenyan roads during the festive season.
Authorities have intensified multi-agency road inspections across the country, led by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), the National Police Service (NPS), and the Judiciary. The ongoing crackdown, which began earlier this month, aims to curb road accidents and tackle corruption among highway operators, particularly during peak travel periods.
As Kenyans travel for the festive season, officials are urging all motorists to exercise extreme caution, adhere to traffic regulations, and prioritize safety to avoid more tragedies.
