Tragic Murder: Homa Bay Teacher Speared to Death, Motorbike Stolen
Police in Rangwe, Homa Bay County, are probing a case where a secondary school teacher was murdered by unidentified individuals while riding his motorcycle on Friday night.
The teacher, named Benson Evans, was killed in Komenya Sub-location, East Kochia Location, after departing from Bakhita Girls Secondary School, where he taught Mathematics and Chemistry.
His attackers speared him in the back of the head and then fled with his motorcycle.
The spear lodged in his head, with part of it protruding through to his mouth.
Evans passed away on Saturday morning after reaching Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu.
Investigations revealed that Evans was last seen in the school compound until just before 7 pm when he left.
At the school’s gate, he reportedly met two colleagues who live at Omoya Trading Centre along Olare-Imbo road.
Since he had a motorcycle, he chose to give his colleagues a ride home.
Komenya Sub-location Assistant Chief Lilian Ombayi mentioned that Evans decided to visit one of his colleagues’ homes.
“He stayed at his colleague’s house until 8:30 pm before heading to his house in Rodi Kopany,” the administrator noted.
Along the way, a group of unidentified individuals confronted him before he reached the main road.
Residents reported hearing a commotion before the teacher cried out for help.
One colleague mentioned that Evans was staggering towards them, and due to the darkness, they couldn’t immediately recognize him.
“He was walking back to the house with difficulty, speaking incoherently, so we thought he was drunk,” a teacher said.

At this point, the neighbors hadn’t noticed he had been speared.
“It was only after he fell that we saw the spear lodged behind his head, and his motorcycle was missing,” the colleagues explained.
The injured teacher was initially taken to a private hospital in Kochia.
However, doctors there said they couldn’t assist and referred him to Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital.
Medics at the referral hospital attempted to stabilize him before recommending his transfer to Kisumu.
All the while, the spear remained stuck in his head.
“He died upon arrival at the hospital in Kisumu,” Ms. Ombayi stated.
His body was subsequently transferred to Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.
Teachers in Homa Bay, under the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet), urged the police to capture and prosecute the murderer.
County Kuppet Chairman Jack Okoth called on the police to expedite the investigation and ensure justice is served.
“We want to know who killed our colleague and why. Justice must be served for Evans’ family,” the union leader stated.
Rangwe Sub-county Police Commander Magdaline Chebet said the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
She mentioned that her officers are following key leads to apprehend the suspects.
