Tragic End: Ex-Lover of Ugandan Olympian Rebeca Cheptegei Dies After Gasoline Attack
Dickson Ndiema, the former partner of the late Ugandan athlete Rebeca Cheptegei, has passed away at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret. He succumbed to injuries sustained from an incident where he suffered burns to 30% of his body.
Ndiema was admitted to the ICU after being rushed to the hospital following a confrontation during which he reportedly doused Cheptegei with gasoline and set her on fire.
According to exclusive reports from Gossipa2z.com, Ndiema, a fellow sports professional, died on Monday night due to his injuries. At the time of publication, MTRH had not yet issued an official statement regarding his death.
Before his demise, Ndiema was expected to face murder charges in connection to Cheptegeiโs death once he recovered from his injuries.
His passing concludes a tragic chapter, sparking conversations about the alarming rise in Gender-Based Violence (GBV) cases across the country.
The United Nations (UN) condemned the circumstances surrounding Cheptegeiโs death, urging swift measures to combat GBV.

“Every 11 minutes, a woman or girl is killed by an intimate partner or family member somewhere in the world. This must stop,” stated Stรฉphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, on September 6.
Cheptegei, who competed in the 2024 Olympics, died five days ago at the same hospital after succumbing to burns covering 80% of her body.
Reports indicate that the altercation stemmed from a land dispute between Cheptegei and Ndiema in Chepkum Village, Trans Nzoia County. The attack occurred after Cheptegei returned from church with her two daughters, according to official police records.
Authorities have verified that the land dispute had been ongoing for some time, adding credibility to reports from local officials.
Cheptegei is set to be laid to rest in her hometown of Bukwa District, Uganda, on September 14. The nation plans to honor her with a heroine’s sendoff, recognizing her Olympic achievements and distinguished career.
Anne Hidalgo, the Mayor of Paris, has also announced plans to name a sports facility in honor of Cheptegei.
