Tragic Boat Capsizing in Tana River Leaves Several Feared Dead

A boat carrying several passengers capsized in the Kona Punda area near Madogo in Tana River County, and there are fears that several people may have died.

The boat is reported to have been carrying 41 passengers on Sunday evening when it encountered turbulent waters and overturned.

Allegedly, the boat was traveling to Mororo, a town located on the border between Garissa and Tana River counties.

By the time this article was published, police had arrived at the location, and rescue efforts were underway.

At the time of publication, it was unclear how many people might have died.

The Kenya Red Cross reported that they sent a team to the location from their offices in Tana River and Garissa counties.

โ€œA boat carrying a large number of people has capsized at Kona Punda while heading to Mororo. Our teams from Garissa and Tana River County are currently responding to the situation,โ€ the Red Cross stated.

It has been said that the boat, along with three others, had been transporting people across the rising Tana River for the last three days.

The owners of the business had been charging the residents a large fee for transporting them across.

This incident occurred shortly after a boat carrying church members capsized in Lake Baringo, resulting in the deaths of six individuals.

Local residents from the area mentioned that the boat encountered difficulties, which resulted in it capsizing.

Additionally, there were other reported occurrences of boats overturning in the months leading up to the most recent event.
