This is a Turning Point: We Will Never Be Outside Govt Again- Opiyo Wandayi

Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has hailed the political truce between President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga as a historic milestone and a game-changer for Luo Nyanza politics.

During his homecoming celebration in Ugunja on Friday, Wandayi emphasized that the Luo Nyanza region has long been sidelined from government representation. Moving forward, he vowed that the region would no longer be excluded from national leadership.

“We appreciate President William Ruto for taking the bold step to unite Kenyans, supported by our leader Raila Amollo Odinga. This historic moment between President Ruto and Raila is unforgettable,” Wandayi declared.

“For us, this marks a significant turning point. As a community, we stand united in saying that never again shall we be left outside of government,” he added.

    Promoting National Unity

In his remarks, Wandayi reassured Kenyans that the newly formed, broad-based government uniting President Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga’s allies will prioritize equitable development across all regions in the country.

“As we embark on this journey, we are committed to ensuring that our government’s development agenda reaches every corner of Kenya without exception,” he affirmed.

At the homecoming ceremony, Migori Senator Eddy Oketch lauded the new government coalition, stating that President Ruto’s inclusive move will significantly strengthen national unity.

“This is a tremendous inspiration for the people of Ugunja, who have supported their son to serve all Kenyans. It’s the embodiment of equal opportunity—where anyone can contribute to government, not just within their community but for the entire country,” Oketch said.

Wandayi is among four senior ODM officials selected by President Ruto to join his government in response to youth-led protests.

The Ugunja MP and former National Assembly Minority Leader remains one of Raila’s closest confidants, having stood by him despite the 2022 presidential election loss.

Despite the broad-based government’s formation to ease political tensions, Raila Odinga continues to face backlash for collaborating with President Ruto.

The criticism intensified earlier this week when Odinga revealed that former President Uhuru Kenyatta urged him to reach out to President Ruto to defuse political unrest during the Gen Z protests.

However, Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni, a key ally of Uhuru, countered Raila’s claims, accusing him of misleading the public and denying that such discussions ever took place.
