Thika Residents Protest Developers Seeking to Build Apartments on 50-Acre Cemetery

On January 27, residents of Thika town in Kiambu County demonstrated against the reported takeover of a local cemetery by private developers.

The locals congregated with placards, branches, and spades while chanting, โ€œLet us stop land grabbing,โ€.

A protester alleged that they were denied entry to the cemeteries, while developers asserted that they had permission to build homes on the property.

A resident asserted that a private developer, accompanied by law enforcement, had visited the cemetery with construction equipment.

“Since 2022, we’ve had no peace with these developers. We are seeking the government to help us,” another lamented.

Moreover, they claimed that the individuals involved in the grabbing incidents collaborated with government authorities, as they were consistently accompanied by law enforcement officers.

Consequently, they requested the disclosure of the names of individuals alleged to have collaborated with the developers.

“We are here because we saw these beacons, and people have been resting on this land for years and years. We wonder how will houses be developed on top of graveyards,” another resident wondered.

As a result, on January 3, residents of Gikumari in the Ruiru constituency of Kiambu County expressed their dissatisfaction by staging a street protest against a purported incident of land grabbing.

As per the residents, title deeds were granted to unidentified contractors by the land grabbers, even though the locals had already made full payments for the specified plots.

The contractors were forced to scamper for safety after the residents turned rowdy.ย
