“They wanted to kill him”: “Ekuru Aukot Alleges Assassination Plot Against Judge Mugambi
Thirdway Alliance party leader Ekuru Aukot has alleged that Justice Lawrence Mugambi’s life is at risk following his conviction of acting Inspector General of Police, Gilbert Masengeli.
Aukot suggests that the aftermath of the six-month jail sentence given to Masengeli raises significant suspicion, hinting at a potential assassination plot.
A day after the ruling, Justice Mugambi’s security was withdrawn and disarmed, prompting an outcry from the judiciary, led by Chief Justice Martha Koome.
“I’m not afraid to say it here, I believe they intended to kill Justice Mugambi. The evidence is circumstantial but compelling,” Aukot stated during an interview on Citizen TV.
“There are reports of people contacting the judge’s driver and security team to locate him. What other purpose could they have, if not to eliminate him? It’s well-known that many people have been abducted or murdered in this country.”
Aukot further argued that Masengeli poses a significant threat to national security, showing blatant disregard for the rule of law.
In Aukot’s opinion, the government must enforce stricter laws to punish officials who break the law.

“Masengeli is a criminal wearing a police uniform. He no longer deserves to wear it. He should be in Kamiti or Industrial Area prisons,” Aukot declared.
Aukot added, “Perhaps we need a special prison with transparent walls where these government officials can be held, so the public can view them like animals in a zoo.”
Masengeli was convicted of contempt for failing to comply with seven court summonses regarding the whereabouts of Bob Njagi, Jamil Longton, and Aslam Longton, who were abducted on August 19, 2024.
The three men were reportedly taken by police during Gen Z-led protests against the government.
In his defense, Masengeli explained that he reassigned Justice Mugambi’s security detail for training in VIP security, claiming that alternative security arrangements had been made for the judge.
If Masengeli doesn’t reverse his defiant stance and report to Justice Mugambi by Monday, September 23, his prison sentence will begin.
Douglas Kanja has been named the new Inspector General of Police, with Masengeli now serving as his deputy.
