The Late KNCHR Chairperson Roseline Odede’s Illustrious Career, Awards & Legacy
The passing of Roseline Odhiambo Odede, Chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), marks the end of a remarkable era for human rights in Kenya. Roseline was a highly respected figure, known for her expertise in gender, governance, policy, and human rights.
She was an advocate of the High Court of Kenya, a Certified Mediator, Arbitrator, and Social and Environmental Impact Auditor, among other roles. Her leadership extended to serving as Vice Chairperson of the Judges, Magistrates, and Vetting Board, as well as holding positions in several organizations, including the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, East Africa Law Society, Law Society of Kenya, and FIDA Kenya.
For over 30 years, Roseline dedicated her efforts to human rights, providing pro bono legal services. Her commitment earned her numerous accolades, including the Head of State Commendation and recognition from the East Africa Law Society for her distinguished legal work. She also earned a Master of Laws degree from the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa.

The news of her death, following a brief illness on January 3, 2025, has left the KNCHR and the nation in mourning. KNCHR Vice Chairperson Dr. Raymond Nyeris expressed the deep sorrow felt within the Commission and the wider community, offering condolences to Roselineโs family and loved ones.
President William Ruto praised her as a powerful human rights advocate and a tireless campaigner for equality. Leaders, including Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo, also expressed their sadness, remembering her courage and dedication.
The KNCHR has urged the public to honor Roselineโs memory and continue her legacy of promoting human rights in Kenya.
